Scale the remote high passes of the Lunana mountain wilderness, observe the ancient cultures of this selectively visited country that only opened its borders to the influence of outsiders in 1974.
Believed by some to be the most difficult high altitude trek in the Himalaya, our 25-day Snowman journey begins on October 8, 2010 (http://www.oneworldtrekking.com/bhutan-snowman-trek.htm) and traverses the country from Punakha to Bumthang. We follow yak herder trails through temperate forests of Rhododendron and Magnolia and soak in high Himalaya hot springs at Gasa on our way to the outlandish village of Laya. Our path then ascends six mountain passes over 15,850 feet, the highest of which is the Gophu La at 17,155 feet, and offers stunning views of virgin peaks including the world?s tallest unclimbed mountain, Gangkar Puensum. Our journey takes us into pristine mountain valleys where shaggy yak graze and tiny villages are nestled. We will travel through regions seeped in Buddhist tradition and history, and villages adorned with stately Dzong (monastery), where the Bhutanese practice this philosophy so integral to their culture and existence.
